ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This Plumber, BPT is responsible for inspection, maintenance, and repair of backflow prevention devices. As well as perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and operational checks on a variety of plumbing systems and supporting equipment You must be able to perform the following essential functions:

  • Inspects and reviews all backflow gauges.
  • Repairs all types of backflow prevention devices.
  • Ensures proper operation of all backflow devices.
  • Completes all Backflow Prevention assembly test repair reports.
  • Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Studies building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations.
  • Inspects structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.
  • Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level and plumb bob.
  • Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Cuts and threads pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe‑threading machine. Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe‑bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand.
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Joins pipe by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints. Fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners. Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
  • Required to repair natural/LP gas distribution systems.
  • May weld holding fixtures to steel structural members. Must be able to inspect, test, repair and install backflow preventers.
  • Observe and follow all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment.
  • May assist with other plumbing problems and/or repairs.
  • All other duties and functions as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Minimum 4 years’ journey level experience, Georgia Secretary of State Licensing Board or equivalent, and Backflow Certification required. Must be able to lift to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Must maintain a valid state driver license. Must be 21 years of age to meet Fleet Management Policy requirements and hold a current valid Driver’s License. Must be able to pass a background and drug test. Covid vaccination (fully vaccinated) required.


  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the maintenance and repair of backflow prevention devices.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Skill in motor coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
  • Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units. 


Must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, managers, and staff members.  Ability to write reports.  Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, fellow employees, and customers.


Must be able to read and interpret various information to ensure procedures are followed.


The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.   The employee may occasionally be required to lift more than 75 pounds.  The employee must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.


The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold, heat, and inclement weather.  The work may require the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, and/or gloves.
